Most of us know that legal fees can be quite expensive. The downside is that the cost of not hiring legal aid when needed can be even higher. Wouldn’t it be nice if there were some ways that you could lower these costs and fees? Well, the good news is that there is. Once you know what to do and how to do it, you can save money on your next legal bill.
What are preparations you can do to save money on your legal bill? What are some tips and guidelines for keeping your legal bill lower when possible? How can you negotiate with your lawyer to try to keep your legal bill more affordable? Here are some guidelines:
- Don’t forget to shop around. It’s okay to take time to talk with different lawyers before choosing the right one for your needs. Don’t feel that you have to be pressured into choosing the first one you talk with. Not all lawyers are created equal and while there are many that are good at what they do and qualified, you also need to find the one that is right for you and your case.
- Conduct interviews with potential lawyers. Before settling on a particular lawyer, feel free to ask questions, do interviews and feel comfortable with them. You should not waste time and money with a lawyer you are not feeling comfortable with.
- Get prepared. If you want to save money, there are many things you can do to prepare for your meeting with your lawyer before you ever set foot in an office. You can do a great deal of research and organization yourself. The more prepared you are before choosing a lawyer and then meeting with your lawyer, the more you will be able to save yourself on the legal costs.
- Gather documents. There are many documents that you can gather for yourself in order to save your lawyer time. This will cut back on costs from research to photocopies even. The more documents you can gather and bring yourself which pertain to the case, the less you will have to pay your lawyer to do.
- Learn to negotiate. In some cases, it is okay to negotiate with your lawyer. Some lawyers charge different fees to different clients and cases. Once you find out what your lawyer’s proposed fees are for your case, you can try to negotiate a lower price. You can also discuss what the fees entail exactly and how you will be billed for certain things. Just remember to be respectful of a busy attorney and not try to haggle your way into unreasonable low costs or you could end up losing your lawyer. Remember also that some lawyers don’t haggle.
- Understand who will staff your case. It’s important to know that attorneys and law firms bill in different ways. Sometimes you may have only one lawyer working on your case, other cases may have two or more. In some cases there will also be paralegals, assistants, and more all helping on the case. How many “staff” are you paying for when it comes to your case?
- Consider a settlement. Depending on your situation and your case, you may want to consider a settlement. Negotiated settlements are typically cheaper than having to go to trial. It is not considered a weakness or a failure to accept a settlement if that settlement is fair and just. Remain open to all of your options instead of pushing for the big “win” in court.
- Discuss your concerns with your lawyer. If you are concerned with your legal bill, you should feel open to discuss it with your lawyer. Most lawyers are understanding of their clients’ concerns and will try to help you and address your concerns in any way they can. While not all fees can be reduced, many lawyers will lower their fees over legitimate concerns. If you have chosen a lawyer that you can trust, you should be able to talk with them about these concerns as well.
When you take the time to follow these steps, it can greatly minimize your legal bill and it can also help you become more involved in your legal affairs and processes. It’s also important to look into your billing arrangements from the beginning. Will there be hourly fees or are there alternatives? Will you be billed for phone calls, research and other activities? How will these things be billed? Is there a cap on these activities and billing? This all plays an important role in the final costs of your legal fees.
Many people worry over their legal bills. They worry that they won’t be able to afford the costs and they worry of what will happen if they don’t get the proper legal assistance. It can often feel like a no-win situation but when you work out ways to lower your legal bill, you will feel much better about seeking the advice you need.
